BIO
For over twenty-five years, Ulises Platas has been a defining force in contemporary Oaxacan art. Rooted in his Zapotec heritage, his work unleashes an intense abstract expressionism marked by raw textures, accelerated strokes, and vibrant, earth-driven palettes. Platas creates a visual universe inhabited by devils, shamans, urban markings, and primitive figures—symbols that speak to identity, memory, and emotional depth. Born in San Juan Guelavía, Oaxaca (1974) and trained at UABJO and the Rufino Tamayo Art Workshop, his paintings have been exhibited across Mexico, the United States, France, and the Dominican Republic, becoming part of permanent collections that seek power, authenticity, and a visceral artistic experience. Platas’s work stands as a captivating fusion of ancestral resonance and contemporary force—an explosion of color, energy, and spirit that defines one of Mexico’s most compelling abstract voices.
